Fraueninsel - a fishing village with lots of character

Allow at least 1.5 hours

Vibrant, unspoilt, rambling and inspiring: Fraueninsel

Its character is completely different to that of Herreninsel. It is much smaller, densely populated and compact. A real idyllic and romantic jewel.

The creativity of a great many painters and poets has been inspired by its beautiful fragrant flower and herb gardens. Stroll past the islanders' densely-packed houses. Escape the hustle and bustle in the 1200-year-old Frauenwörth monastery. Admire the towering white campanile, a free-standing bell tower. Don't forget to visit the Carolingian gatehouse that is considered to be Southern Germany's oldest building.

The island's worldly pleasures bring visitors back to the here and now. A number of pubs and cafés serve refreshments and the island's fishermen offer freshly smoked Chiemsee whitefish and other delicacies in their gardens. The island is home to 6 professional fishermen.
